Khurana Restaurant, Karol Bagh - Delhi

'★★★' I'm sure you guys (Delhi foodies) are familiar with these two acknowledged restaurants in Karol bagh for the delicious meat they serve. First is the legendary Ganesh restaurant of course and the other gem is khurana restaurant. It was always in my best shots list. So it's not unreasonable of me to be so jumpy about this place. I could just smell the aroma of its tandoor from a long stretch in gaffar.

'Khurana restaurant'

The kitchen is on the ground floor. The seating area is up on the 1st and the 2nd floor. The place is small with few tables and people were happily sharing their tables with the strangers. It was quite a busy day with most of the people queued with their takeaway orders. I got seated on the first floor. The place was surrounded by the amazing fragrance of the food all over.

I ordered kalmi kebab, cream chicken, mutton roll, mutton tikka and mutton seekh. The kalmi was not there at the moment but the server promised me that he will try to arrange for it in the next 15-20 minutes. Here is their menu.

Cream chicken

'Cream chicken tandoori'

The cream chicken breast piece was so beautifully glazing with cream, that it made impossible for me to control but to take a chunky bite from it as soon as it was served. Unfortunately, due to my impatience, I almost forgot to click a pic.

Cream chicken

'Cream Chicken'

The chicken was not perfectly cooked/marinated from inside. The tenderness was not up to the mark. The cream chicken got to be melting into the mouth but that was not the case here. I can give it a 7 out of 10. Throw double the cream and little more marination, it would be perfect.

mutton seekh roll

I was looking forward to the mutton kebab roll to arrive as I was really counting on it. The mutton was overwhelming as were the flavours.

It was buttery, rich ,spicy and juicy. That was a wonderfully prepared meat. All the ingredients jelled together perfectly with each of its distinctive aroma and flavours.

Just sit over and feel the zest of those amazing kebabs. For me, it was a terrific starter among all, which bound me to order them again at the end so I could wind up on a delicious note.

mutton tikka

'Mutton tikka'

Mutton tikka was hinted to me by the server. They were 10-12 small pieces of tikka which created magic with the awesome orange gravy which screamed of rich tomato essence. They were one of the best mutton tikka's I had in a long time. They were chewy, totally fresh, spicy and above all, the thick gravy was infused inside it totally. The stunning gravy was a colourful medley for me.

Kalmi kebab

'Kalmi Kebab'

So after finishing all this, the server asked me if I was willing to have kalmi kebabs. I was almost full but the greed forced me to order a plate of it as well. The preparation of kalmi is a very tedious affair. The leg pieces (thighs & drumsticks) have to be marinated for at least 24 hrs and the marination itself consist of 6-10 ingredients. Kalmi is the only dish which I have found stunning at rare places.

Just by looking at those leg pieces I was sure that they were in the middle of nowhere from what a kalmi has to be. Lack of marination as they were prepared in a hurry, just to fulfil the order. It was rather ordinary tandoori chicken. Coleslaw on top was a waste. It was flavourless.

Lastly: I am surely going to visit again to provoke my taste buds with their ambrosial main course, as this time I was already loaded with some of the generously portioned starters. The mushier kebabs and lively mutton tikka's were a class by itself. Everybody, from the server to owner, was courteous and gentle. It's a small place, looks pretty much local, not jazzy at all but serves good food.
